Micro current therapy in our offices has been a wonderful addition to our multimodality services in healing arts work. Many people don't know about therapeutic micro current, it is used often in Europe and is still coming to the surface here in America, but it works.

I have had patients come to my office and tell me, "The doctor said I'll have this for the rest of my life, there's nothing they can do!"…but micro current can change all of that.

I have had many people come into my office with a grimace of pain on their faces, looking ready to cry, and when they walk out after receiving a micro current treatment, they are pain-free and smiling. Over time many complaints will fade away.

What is therapeutic micro current?

In most cases it is for pain relief and injuries. Therapeutic micro current treatments are painless and noninvasive, and quickly help to heal the body at the cellular level, unlike traditional pain relief methods. Micro current helps to return the body's electrical current to a normal activity level. It improves circulation and cell metabolism, and releases endorphins into the body from the brain, which relieves pain. All of these improvements reduce not only pain but inflammation and accelerate the healing process to help the body to heal itself. The healing relief lasts longer with each successive treatment, and many patients experience a cumulative effect.

What is a therapeutic micro current treatment like?

A skilled technician administers the treatment while you are comfortably either lying down or sitting up during the healing session. Some patients feel a slight tingling, although many feel nothing at all, only relief from pain and healing to the injury.

How does therapeutic micro current work?

The use of Micro current over the injured site is thought to realign the flow of energy, thus aid in tissue repair. ATP is the primary molecule from which our body produces energy, and it's found in every cell of the body. Micro current was also shown to increase protein synthesis and amino acid transport. It's been found that ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) in the cell helps to promote protein synthesis and healing. The lack of ATP due to trauma of the tissue results in the decreased production of sodium and an increase in metabolic wastes, which is perceived as pain. The use of Micro current at an injured area helps to realign the body's electrical current, increase the production of ATP, resulting in increased healing and recovery, as well as blocking the pain that is perceived. Micro current will increase ATP production by 500%. In a study done by Ngok Cheng, M.D. entitled "The Effects of Electric Current on ATP Generation, Protein Synthesis and Membrane Transport," it was demonstrated that ATP production increased five times with currents from 50 uA to 1000 uA. With currents exceeding 1000 uA, which is the milliamp range, ATP production leveled, and with 5000 uA ATP production was reduced slightly.

How many treatments does it take to achieve pain relief?

Typically, 4 to 16 treatments are needed to eradicate pain completely, but relief is usually experienced after just one. Over time as the treatments build on one another, the relief becomes more permanent as your body is re-trained to be healthy once again.

How is micro current different from TENS and other similar techniques?

Micro current is sub sensory and cannot be felt while it is being delivered because there is not enough current to stimulate the sensory receptors. Traditional electrotherapy units such as TENS, Interferential and Galvanic deliver current in milliamps, which is a higher level of current. They can cause muscle contraction and micro current cannot.

What are the results of therapeutic micro current treatments?

Micro current is pain relief from the inside out, not a cover-up for symptoms like drugs. When there's a decrease in pain and swelling you have healing, so therapeutic micro current helps speed the healing process by reducing swelling and inflammation for treatment of both acute and chronic pain. It releases muscles and trigger points and improves soft tissue regeneration.
